Pink

I am working on two pieces for the Summer of Color Pink challenge.  The fiber art that I am making is going to come from a piece of snow dyed fabric that I made last winter.  Here is a look at the fabric a bit early.  Come back next week to see what I did with it.

  5. Thanks. I love making pretty fabric to use in other projects.

My process for making the snow dyed fabric isn't too complicated. I use fiber reactive dyes in my dyeing. I soak my fabric in the soda ash solution just like you do for tie dye. Then I set my fabric on top of a screen, over a tub, in whatever pattern that I want to use (this fabric was just scrunched up loosely). I pile snow all over the fabric and then I use three dye solutions that complement each other and squirt them all over the snow. I cover the whole mess up with plastic and let it sit overnight in a warm place. As the snow melts it carries the dye into the fabric and makes really beautiful patterns. The next day I rinse and wash it out using Synthrapol. If you need more detail on basic dye processes there is a lot of information on this website, www.dharmatrading.com.
